Kamal Haasan is an Indian film actor, screenwriter and director, considered to be one of the leading method actors of Indian cinema. He is widely acclaimed as an actor and is well known for his versatility in acting. He has won several Indian film awards, including four National Film Awards and numerous Filmfare Awards, and is known for having starred in the largest number of films submitted by India in contest for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His film production company, Rajkamal International, has produced several of his films. In 1990, he was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian cinema. He is also a recipient of an Honorary doctorate by Sathyabama University. In 2009, he became one of very few Indian actors to have completed 50 years in cinema.

Kamal Haasan studied at Holy Angels school in T. Nagar. As a child, he became interested in dance. There are two versions regarding his entry into films. One version has it that, as a little boy, he accompanied a doctor who went to treat an ill woman at the home of movie mogul A.V.Meyyappa Chettiar . On hearing loud shouting from a first-floor tenant of the bungalow, the doctor became uneasy. Young Kamal Haasan strode up the stairway to ask the noisemaker not to shout over the phone as someone was ill, leaving the person astonished. An impressed Meyyappa Chettiar later provided him an entry into films. The other version is that when young boy Kamal Haasan accompanied a family doctor of Meyyappa Chettiar to his house, producer AVM Saravanan noticed Kamal as a hyperactive child. He took him over and introduced to AV Meyyappa Chettiar who was looking for a young boy to play a role in the movie Kalathur Kannamma.
Kamal Haasan made his film debut as a 6-year-old child artiste, in the 1960 film Kalathur Kannamma, directed by A. Bhimsingh. He was cast along with the veteran Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan in the film, which won him the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. On seeing Kamal's interests in arts, his parents supported and helped him join the TKS Nataka Sabha, an old-style theatre. T. K. Shanmugam was Kamal's guru in the theatre.

In early 2011, sources claimed that Kamal shelved that project and agreed to star in a Selvaraghavan directorial, being impressed by the one-line story narrated to him. Reports further suggested that the film was based on the 2001 American psychological thriller Hannibal, with Kamal playing a cannibal, similar to Anthony Hopkins' role, while Yuvan Shankar Raja was said to compose the film's musical score. The film became named Vishwaroopam by late March and was planned to begin by mid-April and be completed within 100 days. It was further revealed that the film would be produced in three languages Tamil, Telugu and Hindi simultaneously, and that Kamal therefore had signed the musical trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy, leading composers in Bollywood, for the music department, replacing Selvaraghavan's choice, Yuvan Shankar Raja.

On 24 May 2011, it was announced that Selvaraghavan was ousted from the project, who was busy finishing his ongoing project with his brother Dhanush, and Kamal Hassan decided to direct the film himself in addition to writing the story, screenplay and dialogues. The producing studio, Telephoto Films, had urged Kamal Haasan to take up the project, planning for a release on 7 November 2011, while sources further reported that the estimated budget was around INR 150 crores, making it one of the costliest productions in India.

Kamal as a terrorist in vishwaroopam

A huge village set has been erected on Old Mahabalipuram Road and more than 300 people are on the sets. And Kamal Haasan is playing none other than a terrorist! It seems the actor is in the guise of an Al-Qaeda terrorist and his makeup and look is such that no one can recognize him. Rahul Bose is currently filming with Kamal and he too is said to be playing a terrorist. The initial storyline, sources say, was about how Kamal disguises himself as a terrorist to investigate a murder and the CBI, believing he's an actual terrorist, is on the chase. The person who is leading the CBI charge is a woman and the actress is yet to be finalized for the role. Sources add that Sameera Reddy may have been approached for this role. There are around 12 foreign technicians who are working on the sets. At the moment, 10 Red cameras and 5 normal cameras are being used to can the shots.

Pooja is replacing Sonakshi Sinha, who was originally signed for the film. After Sonakshi’s exit, it was rumoured that Shriya Saran was approached for the role, but did not work out. “Pooja Kumar will star opposite me in Viswaroopam. She’s a Punjabi girl of Indian origin. It’s a big break for her. Vishwaroopam is probably the biggest film being made in Tamil Nadu,” Kamal. Crowned Miss India USA, Pooja worked as VJ for Channel V and was a newsreader on the show Namaste America. She did small roles in Kaadhal Rojave, Night of Henna, Flavors, Hiding Divya, Park Sharks, Bollywood Beats, Anything For You and Anjaana Anjaan.
